Outgoing SMTP: mail.minternet.org (SMTP authentication required)

Incoming email

Email arriving on the server is processed by Postfix, Procmail and SpamAssassin. It is delivered in maildir format into $HOME/.maildir . Stuff that SpamAssassin thinks is spam will go into a folder called Spam. You can access this like any other mail folder using an IMAP client. You can easily change the Procmail and SpamAssassin settings that I have configured for you (using a text editor or Usermin.) In the event that the mail server is temporarily down, incoming mail will go to my backup MX server (which also has spam protection,) and relayed to the main server when it comes back up so that nothing is lost.

Reading mail

You can use any IMAP client (I recommend Mozilla or Evolution.) Our server is Courier IMAP and is accessible with or without SSL. If you really want to use POP3 it's available, but IMAP is much better. We also have SquirrelMail at: https://mail.minternet.org/.

Sending mail

If you want to send mail via the server, you need to use SMTP authentication.

Usermin

This lets you:
from any machine with a web browser. You can find it at https://minternet.org:20000/.

Disk quota

You can find out how much you are using with the quota command or with Usermin. This is a soft limit, but please try not to exceed it often. If you exceed the soft limit for more than 7 days at a time, writes will fail until you come under again. Your hard limit cannot be exceeded.

Reliability

Location: The server is located in a Network Operations Centre in New Jersey. It has redundant storage, backup power, multiple Internet links and other good things.

Backups: I run nightly off-site backups for disaster recovery (if the hardware breaks I can get your stuff back.) While I'm open to begging and bribes, I don't propose to offer a restore service for customer files.

Monitoring: Services are monitored 24x7. In addition to the team on the ground, I also get notified by mobile phone.

Privacy

As a system administrator, I regard the contents of your files and email as private. While I won't deliberately set out to snoop through you stuff, I may see snippets in the course of fixing problems. If I do, I promise not to pass it on or use it unless required by law.
